May 13, 2016—Spillane Middle School’s math and science teams gave an outstanding performance at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) State Championship, held April 16 at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Competing in the largest and toughest 6A division with hundreds of students from more than 80 middle schools across the state, Spillane’s teams won the fourth-place trophy in math and fourth-place trophy in science. Spillane also placed seventh in Number Sense and seventh in overall Sweepstakes.
Spillane’s science team was comprised of students Govind Chada,Tristan Wiesepape, Rahul Shanmugham and Ashay Swadi.

Competing with hundreds of students, Govind Chada and Tristan Wiesepape won fifth- and sixth-place individual trophies in science,Angela Zhong won the fifth-place trophy in math and ninth-place trophy in Number Sense and Steven Cheng won the sixth-place trophy in math.
Showing outstanding work ethic and perseverance, the students spent hundreds of hours in the evenings and weekends learning critical problem-solving skills and teamwork that prepares them for life beyond middle school.
Spillane won numerous competitions throughout the year, including impressive performances in MathCounts and National Science Bowl.
“Once again, this dedicated team of talented students came together to shine,” said Cheryl Flint, Spillane science campus content instructional specialist and club sponsor. “We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and efforts.”
